La Casona Azul ocupa una edificación originalmente destinada a la administración del complejo de movilización y cargas del Ferrocarril Tacna-Arica en la localidad que se denominaba El Hospicio de Chacalluta, actual Villa Frontera. Formaba parte de un complejo de oficinas, bodegas y viviendas al servicio del transporte de los productos del Valle de Lluta y embarque de la sal producida en Las Salinas de Chacalluta, cuyos restos aún son visibles.
Esta vía férrea fue construida en 1857 por la firma inglesa de Mr. José Hegan, concesionada por el Gobierno Peruano de la época, ubicándose como uno de los primeros ferrocarriles de Sudamérica.
La edificación de la Casona Azul, una de las más antiguas de Arica, ha sido completamente restaurada respetando su arquitectura de estilo colonial inglés, con amplios corredores que la circundan y recintos interiores espaciosos y de gran dignidad.
Se accede a ella por el camino pavimentado Libertador José de Sucre, que une la Carretera Panamericana Norte con Villa Frontera, sector de Arica que se está desarrollando como Centro Turístico, cercano a la desembocadura del río Lluta, ambiente de playas y vegas costeras que conforman un lugar de hermosos paisajes naturales, propicio para variadas actividades recreativas, tales como: caminatas, observación de avifauna, baños de sol, de mar y pesca deportiva de orilla.
Casona Azul occupies a building which was originally used as the administrative headquarters of the transport and cargo system of the Tacna-Arica Railroad, located in a town previously named “El Hospicio de Chacalluta” and which is currently known as “Villa Frontera.” It was part of a complex of offices, warehouses and residences that provided transport services to produce from the Lluta Valley, as well as the shipment of salt produced in the “Salinas de Chacalluta” (salt mines) whose structures are still visible today.

The Railroad was built in 1857 by a British firm owned by Mr. José Hegan on request from the Government of Peru of the time, which makes the Tacna-Arica Railroad one of the first in South America.
The Casona Azul, which is one of the oldest structures in Arica, has been completely restored, respecting its British colonial arquitecture, with ample corridors bordering the house and spacious inner halls, providing an elegant aura. Twelve-foot ceilings provide all inner rooms an ideal temperature year-round.
Casona Azul is reached by the paved road Libertador José de Sucre, which joins the Panamerican highway to Villa Frontera, a sector being developed as a Tourist Center close to the delta of the Lluta river. It is located in an area of beaches and ocean-front marshes that form part of beautiful natural landscape and is apt for various recreational activities, such as long walks, bird watching, ocean and/or sun bathing, and shore-fishing.
